Polarity

I created a book that by presents two opposing styles of graphic design, photography, and narrative writing.

When viewing the book one way, you can read about tourist style adventures, filled with large scale drone photography and mementos of polaroids. However, when you view the book flipped upside down, the stories turn into eeriee thrills of venturing into the unknown, where artificial lights are used to guide your way through these landmarks. 

With a deadline of just 10 weeks, I had to travel to 15 locations around the Pacific Northwest that would be featured in the book. The creative challenge was keeping a consistent visual identity through each medium. My process started with finding locations that fit my criteria: a man-made structure in an isolated environment. On location, I took photos and wrote about my experience there.

I explored typography that matched the feeling and aesthetic of day and night. Once I had all of the content together, I sketched compositions to see how everything would live on a page. From there, I created a book map to and made test prints to see how the entire book would be laid out. 

The culmination of this project concluded at my thesis presentation, where I showcased ten large format prints in a gallery, as well as finished printed books. As a bonus, I made bookmarks featuring my photos to give away. I also had the the Polaroid camera and the physical photos I took with it on display, along with the receipts from my trip.
